The Société Anonyme was conceived by and created in 1920 by Katherine S. Dreier, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray all artists committed to "the new movement in art", Modern Art. They assembled a membership of about 170 like minded artists who then assembled a collection by purchase, gift or donation of more than 1000 works. The "Museum of Modern Art" in the title is not the museum we know today as MoMA, which was established about a decade later.
